The Signal Mountain Police Department is a fully accredited law enforcement agency through the Tennessee Law Enforcement Accreditation Program since 2019.  We received our second accreditation award from the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police in 2022.

We provide services that directly and positively impact the safety, security, and quality of life for all of our citizens.  Those services include but are not limited to active neighborhood patrols, DUI enforcement, drug enforcement and criminal investigations.  The department is comprised of 15 full time officers, a civilian clerk and an administrative assistant to the Chief of Police.

The Town of Signal Mountain contracted with the Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) to conduct a Comprehensive Management Review  (CMR) of the Signal Mountain Police Department.  The study reviewed department operations, staffing levels, fleet, training, equipment and physical plant.  The CMR can be viewed in the link above.

TRAFFIC SAFETY
SMPD is an active participant in all Tennessee Highway Safety Office programs (THSO). THSO is a division of the Department of Homeland Security and provides grant funding to local law enforcement agencies for enhanced traffic safety by changing driver behavior through increased education, enforcement and community partnerships.

TRAINING
All officers complete a minimum of 40 hours in-service training each year as required by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (POST) and all have successfully completed a 12 week Basic Police Academy.  In addition, they complete an intensive Field Training program within the department. Officers attend advanced law enforcement training in areas such as DUI Enforcement, domestic violence, child and elderly abuse, response to active shooter training, criminal investigations, leadership and every patrol officer is required to be trained as a certified Crisis Intervention Officer (CIT).  Many of our officers and supervisors hold instructor certificates in firearms training, Taser and pepper spray, response to active shooter, radar and defensive tactics.
